Das Preisgeld erhält der/die Regisseur/in des Films, den Gutschein die Produktionsfirma des Films. In die Auswahl für den Großen Diagonale-Preis/Spielfilm kommen alle österreichischen Kinospielfilme, die im Programm der Diagonale’20 präsentiert wurden. Die Jurysichtungen erfolgten nach Covid-19-bedingter Absage des Festivals online.

Die Begründung der Jury:
“We give the award for best film to The Trouble With Being Born by Sandra Wollner. With the android Elli, a girl living with her creator, a man she calls ‘Papa’, Wollner succeeds in depicting a scary yet ‘loving’ paedophile relationship that she moves into the realm of fantasy. Oscillating between memory and projection into the future, this film is a testimonial to the breadth and timeliness of cinema. This is already proven by the idea of starting a film project not with a story or plot but with a philosophical text, in this case by controversial philosopher Emil Cioran. Never moralistic but always ambiguous, the film touches the fears and wishes of our time, for every viewer. With poetic imagery and sound, as well as a good choice of actors, it creates an atmosphere of torment in which all the elements work well together.”
