The set-up is simple and ingenious: the residents of a Munich apartment block, mostly migrant workers, step one after the other in front of the static camera in the stairwell, introduce themselves and leave the shot again. Their countries of origin vary, as do their statements and the time they spend in front of the camera. Žilnik’s défilé is more than a contemporary document: a cinematic positioning of great formal precision that turns the bureaucratic act of inventory into a human stocktaking.
