When most people think about Braunau am Inn, they don’t think of a tranquil little town, but of the “Hitler House,” as everyone there calls it. The social welfare organization Lebenshilfe was actually supposed to move into the house where Adolf Hitler was born, but then the Austrian Ministry of the Interior turned it into a location for the federal police. This strange decision prompted Günter Schwaiger to reflect not only on Austria’s handling of its Nazi past, but also the history of his own family.
