Diagonale ’24-Trailer by Eva Egermann and Cordula Thym

A co-production of Diagonale and Kunsthaus Graz

For Diagonale ’24, artists and filmmakers Eva Egermann and Cordula Thym created the trailer entitled Under the Image. People who don’t conform to the “image” are “put down”, reports Iris Kopera, artist and peer counsellor for people with learning difficulties. In the trailer, Eva Egermann and Cordula Thym show unpublished material from their film C-TV: (Wenn ich Dir sage, ich habe Dich gern …) and discover the beach beneath the image, an inclusive and resistant place for bodies and films beyond standardising images. Based on the saying “Under the pavement, the beach” from the 1970s, the trailer recalls memories of political protest movements of the time and the desire to change social conditions.

C-TV: Close Encounters of the Hamster Kind

C-TV moves into the Kunsthaus as a “contribution to shifting the social atmosphere of the earth”. The exhibition, consisting of props and background materials, extends the film into the three-dimensional space of experience – as a medium from a better future in which the world is a different one. Here, everything that is the norm and normality and is regarded as ability or wholeness has long since given way to a place of the many, where people with disabilities enrich the life of the community with finery and pomp. Curated by Katrin Bucher Trantow.

Opening: Fri 5 April, 11 am
Exhibition: 6 April to 5 May

Eva Egermann (*1979, Austria) is an artist and lives in Vienna. She works as an artist and researcher in various media on activist movements, subculture and the political conditions of ability/weakness and non-conformist bodies. Together with filmmaker Cordula Thym, Egermann produced the 30-minute documentary-fictional television show C-TV (Wenn ich Dir sage, ich habe Dich gern …) in 2023, which – in a humorous way that is critical of representation – sketches out the utopia of an inclusive film and media world. In the same year, she and Thym were awarded the Diagonale Prize for Innovative Cinema. Last exhibition participations: Total Museum Seoul (2022), 17th Istanbul Biennial (2022), Einstweilen wird es Mittag, Kunsthalle Wien (2022/23), Slime, Secession (202
