Tankred Dorst’s film adaptation of his own novel draws its dramatic impact not only from the inevitable tragedy surrounding the coarse-looking truck driver Schroth (Gerhard Olschewski) and his disabled daughter Marga (Susanne Lothar), but also from the black-and-white images by cameraman Jürgen Jürges. Eisenhans has become “an evil German fairy tale” says Dorst about his directorial debut in which thanks to Jürges’s visual design, the fairy-tale-like quality is concealed behind the harsh reality.
