Margarethe von Trotta’s sumptuously furnished biopic interweaves two episodes from Ingeborg Bachmann’s life: the poet’s unhappy love affair with Max Frisch and a trip to Africa that Bachmann embarked upon after her separation from the Swiss novelist. Von Trotta tells of oppressive male possessiveness—and yet shows that the life of the famous writer was far more than an eternal martyrdom.
