Following the Second World War, the scientist Rothe meets his former assistant Hoesch, both of whom share a criminal past. While Rothe cannot bring himself to forget the past, Hoesch feels no guilt for his actions. Rothe no longer wishes to be a “lost one” – and resolves to kill again.
