At the turn of the century, with Sonnenflecken and mainly Nordrand, Barbara Albert established the seminal elements of a new cinema: female, shaped by poetic realism. In Sonnenflecken, two young women live with a young girl on the fringes of the city. In Nordrand, Vienna becomes a place where new nomads of the twenty-first century meet: for the promise of a new start, new and diverse lifestyles. The city becomes a symbolic site of desire for a generation for whom national borders, language, ethnic affiliation, and gender should no longer present barriers.
