Thirty-six years of civil war have established violence as a socially acceptable solution to conflict, reflects a man about his native Guatemala. The country has never been able to come to terms with its past, and the government is largely at a loss as to how to act or react to the problem. Ofner traces the growth of this culture of violence, which appears to overshadow the political and economic concerns in the everyday life of Guatemalans: family life on one hand, organized crime on the other.
