Bearing the same title as the short story by Boris Vian, the year 1989 aw the making of Die toten Fische, a surrealistic film about the struggle for freedom from impenetrable hierarchies. Receiving considerable attention at international festivals, its success was cut short for financial reasons. Director and producer Michael Synek was forced to relinquish all rights to the film, after which it disappeared from the public eye. 20 years later, Synek fought to win back the rights, but by then the negatives had been lost. Only a timely and comprehensive restoration would manage to salvage the film. The director and part of the team will be present.
