For 400 years, Trapani (Sicily) has been host to extravagant Good Friday processions. Heavy, garishly decorated altars are hauled through the crowded streets by entangled groups of men. The spectacle around the awe-inspiring Passion of the Christ goes on for two days and is accompanied by evocative funeral march music. Without commentary, Burger begins with the preparations, the opulent procession, and the efforts involved, in a film suffused with the magic of religious ritual.
