The illusionist machine cinema has no place for the materiality of film stock. It is only when there is a problem (in the projector) that the basis of the film’s existence, celluloid, can be seen on the screen. All at once, the projector operator and the material reveal their otherwise “hidden” existence. In a way, East Man focuses on the “system failures” and shows the kind of images usually avoided in a cinema screening, in other words, the film as a material substance.
