Two frightend boys locked in the dark of a cellar. The father is an unseen threatening presence. The reason for this horror and the extent of it can only be guessed at – Catafalque is ambiguous in its subject and its visuals. The audience is literally left in the dark, the dark of the basement; the children’s hiding place and simultaneously their jail. The soundtrack is the only constant witness – absolutely unambiguous and yet unclear.
