After the death of her parents, eight-year-old Ana (Ana Torrent) grows up under the care of her strict aunt. The crumbling family villa in Madrid becomes a microcosm of dreams and memories in which Ana is repeatedly visited by visions of her deceased mother (Geraldine Chaplin). Shot in the year of Franco’s death, Carlos Saura’s film provides a poetic snapshot of a dictatorship in its final throes: the children’s games reveal a freedom into which an entire society will soon be released.
