Alexander Horwath’s epic, deeply moving cinematic essay knowledgeably and elegantly links the histories of Henry Fonda and the United States. In doing so, he sketches a “politics” of the actor along his film roles: Fonda plays U.S. presidents multiple times and embodies an (incomplete, still to be achieved) ideal of American democracy. While Lincoln once became a John Ford character through Fonda, Fonda becomes a Horwath character through Lincoln. It’s the role of a lifetime.
