Baba, What’s Your Plan?/ Baba, Ne Yapmayı Düşünüyorsun?

Jury Statement:
What makes a person ill? Is it having had to leave behind one’s birthplace and one’s parents in order to build a future, and then not being there when they needed you? Or is it that building a future in Austria also proved difficult, because one kept being pushed to one’s limits? A son sets out with his father in search of traces — to the places where the father himself left hardly any visible marks, traces that instead seem to have inscribed themselves onto his body in the form of scars, inflammations, and swelling.

The jury saw a film that engages its subject with a fine sense of rhythm and with trust in a narrative delivered plainly and without bitterness. Without forcing anything, the film moves calmly from image to spoken word, giving space to one of many voices that still resonate too little within Austrian society. It is at once a tribute and a declaration of love, and in the end it lets a garden come into bloom — one that declares the appreciation of beauty to be life’s true purpose.
