Tara Nome Doyle
Rose

Jury Statement:

In this film, the music unfolds as a haunting force that subverts the visible and makes the invisible audible. Tara Nome Doyle’s a cappella composition dispenses with any instrumental support, thereby laying bare the voice itself. Her voice becomes a resonant space for all that remains unspoken between the characters. It carries tensions, shifts meanings, and opens an inner space that we can neither fully grasp nor entirely escape. Tara Nome Doyle accompanies Rose like a quiet breath moving through the film’s poetic imagery and the magnificent performances of Sandra Hüller and Caro Braun, lending the film a piercing and vulnerable depth.

Yuri Nosenko
A Russian Winter

Jury Statement:
Relatively early on, we see an archived punk performance by Yuri Nosenko, the composer and one of the film’s protagonists. It is a dissident statement that, in the current situation of the Russian exiles whose lives the film traces, is almost entirely lost. The sounds Nosenko develops over the course of the film correspond to its theme of dissolved connections, yet within this state — much like the artificial visual spaces, the costumes, and the production design — they find an idiosyncratic freedom that slips away from fixed attributions and identities. The jury honors a work of musical style-making that, in a world coming apart, refuses to be pinned down.
