Yuri Nosenko
A Russian Winter
Jury Statement:
Relatively early on, we see an archived punk performance by Yuri Nosenko, the composer and one of the film’s protagonists. It is a dissident statement that, in the current situation of the Russian exiles whose lives the film traces, is almost entirely lost. The sounds Nosenko develops over the course of the film correspond to its theme of dissolved connections, yet within this state — much like the artificial visual spaces, the costumes, and the production design — they find an idiosyncratic freedom that slips away from fixed attributions and identities. The jury honors a work of musical style-making that, in a world coming apart, refuses to be pinned down.
