Nine favorite films: that ask questions, arrive fleet footed, tell of something. And in doing so, travel the globe, following in the footsteps of the journeys and life of the artist who selected them. Lisl Ponger\u2019s Carte Blanche<\/a> begins with John Smith on a street corner in London, then leaps with Tim Sharp to Ethiopia, with Rivane Neuenschwander to Brazil, and with Jean Rouch to Ghana. Reality is staged, the framing films the staging: first, the traffic directs (Smith), then the wind (Sharp), then the ants (Neuenschwander), then the ghosts of colonialism (Rouch). Nuotama Bodomo\u2019s afronauts and the women of a Mexican Zapatista collective, on the contrary, decolonize Western hierarchies, offer resistance through cooperation. In the end, liberation reaches a European office that Julian Sharp abandons to anarchism. As postscript: Mickey Mouse goes to the Vietnam war \u2026 Nine films, united by their optimism, their desire for freedom. And the pleasure of those who made them, in making them.
