Thomas Bernhard owned a Vierkanthof, a farmhouse arranged around a central courtyard, in the Upper-Austrian village of Ohlsdorf. The relationship of the inhabitants of the village to their most prominent fellow resident was ambivalent. While in his texts he continually railed against the provinces, Der Bauer zu Nathal lets the people of Ohlsdorf have a look at the writer. A complex confrontation with Bernhard’s role as crank, and the complex challenges for a small community forced to deal with a huge heritage.
