This is the first post-war horror film, based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe, studded with screen favorites such as Lex “Old Shatterhand” Barker, Bond girl Karin Dor and horror master Christopher Lee. The film is an exuberantly tragic comic strip ride on a creaking ghost train, full of torture chambers, black-clad horsemen and forests full of corpses and fog banks. It’s vintage horror with a heightened camp factor.
