Sulukule, a district of Istanbul, is the oldest Roma settlement in the world. In 2005, the increasingly impoverished occupants and the rundown façades were pushed aside for luxury apartments. Capital and reform efforts threaten the culture that has existed in this neighbourhood for more than 1,000 years. Using Sulukule as an example, Astrid Heubrandtner succeeds in illustrating the global phenomenon of gentrification: a sensitive portrait of those who fall by the wayside.
