Lon Chaney in a game with and against himself: From 46 black-and-white films of the “Man of a Thousand Faces,” Norbert Pfaffenbichler has lifted excerpts and concocted a nightmarish meta-story. In it, Chaney, an actor from the silent film era who acts out all of the parts, is accompanied only by Bernhard Lang’s intervening silent film score.
