“The world is all around us, and we are there in the middle of it all, blind.” Michael Haneke’s version of a black comedy develops into a snapshot of a middle-class European family: The Laurent’s operate a booming construction company in Calais. But the foundation of their dynasty’s success progressively crumbles and the problems in their private lives also come to a head. Haneke stages the resulting turbulence measuredly, almost ceremonially. Not much left to hope for, but who still believes in happy endings anyway?
