It was in a span of barely four years in Cambodia’s history, from 1975 to 1979, that the Khmer Rouge starved, tortured and slaughtered two million people in the name of revolution. To this day, daily life remains haunted by the horrors of those years – whether in Cambodia itself or in exile in France. Susanne Brandstätter documents the lives of three families of survivors and their children. The latter inquire about the past, insist on hearing stories, and strive to understand in order to make sense of their lives born of a collective trauma.
