On March 11, 1938, Austria became the first victim of national socialism—or in any case, that’s what was announced by an exhibition that opened in the memorial site Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1978 and closed forty years later. Der schönste Tag shows the struggle for a new concept, which at the same time, also poses the question of the Republic’s self-image. With his film, Fabian Eder enters a contorted panoptic of the narrative. What story should survive; how much honesty is acceptable?
